Founded in 2023 as a spin-out from the University of Nottingham’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Forge Genetics makes strain development easier using its own genetic engineering tool, Forge Editing.
Forge Editing was created to help researchers work with ‘hard-to-engineer’ bacteria. It performs precise and efficient edits in bacteria that are difficult to modify, doing things other tools often can’t. It’s also a simpler and cheaper option compared to other gene editing methods that are tied up in complex patents.
Since its launch, Forge Genetics has worked as a contract research organisation, helping companies and research groups outsource strain development using Forge Editing. The team is also working on adapting the technology for human cells to support safer gene therapies in the future.
