Profile

Established in 2020, Cerca Magnetics develops integrated human brain imaging systems based on quantum technology, building on intellectual property from the University of Nottingham’s School of Physics and Astronomy. The company uses optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) – small, lightweight quantum-enabled sensors – to detect the magnetic fields produced by neural activity in the brain, a technique known as OPM-MEG.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) measures magnetic fields generated by current flow in assemblies of neurons, allowing the construction of images that capture moment-to-moment changes in brain activity. This offers an extremely powerful means to assess brain function and dysfunction in neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Unlike conventional MEG scanners – which are large, heavy, one-size-fits-all, and require participants to remain still for long periods – Cerca’s system is worn like a helmet, adapting to any head size and enabling participants to move freely during scans. It also delivers higher sensitivity and better spatial precision at a lower cost than traditional MEG scanners.
